According to tradition, the Buddha was born in the year 563 BC. One night his mother, Maya Devi, dreamt that a six-tusked white elephant entered her side. Wise advisers of her husband, the chief of the Sakyas in the Himalayan foothills, interpreted her dream as foretelling the birth to her of a great secular or religious leader.
